David Jaffe founded the God of War action-adventure game series at Sony's Santa Monica Studio. With nine versions spread across many platforms, it started in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game device and has since established itself as a hallmark series for PlayStation. The tale, which is based on ancient myths, centres on Kratos, a Spartan warrior who became the Greek God of War after being duped into murdering his family by Ares, his former mentor and the first Greek God of War. This starts a chain of events that result in conflicts between the many mythological pantheons.Due to the Olympian gods' schemes, Kratos pursues vengeance in the Greek-based games. However, in the Norse-based games, which feature his son Atreus as a supporting protagonist, Kratos pursues redemption and unintentionally clashes with the Norse gods.
